Endometriosis Treatment

Endometriosis is a condition of "pieces" of endometrial tissue (uterine lining) being implanted outside of the uterus. If can be found anywhere in the body and is typically found implanted on one or both ovaries or elsewhere in the abdominopelvic cavity. It has been also found on the heart, lungs, brain, muscle, and other organs. How it gets there isn't known, though there is evidence that it may occur during embryological development, travel through blood vessels, or retrograde menstrual flow, the occurrence of menstrual blood flowing up the fallopian tubes and out into the pelvic cavity

Symptoms:

Endometriosis symptoms begin either with first menses (menarche) or can start anytime after menarche. The main symptoms are painful menses, pain with vaginal intercourse, and infertility. Pain can last for part of a day, or occur all month. Pain has been described as intense labor-like cramps, chronic bearing down pain (like the uterus is falling out) and pressure on the pelvis and lower back, and radiating down the legs.

Other symptoms and problems include:

  • Pelvic pain with urination and bowel movements.
  • Bleeding from the nose, bladder and/or bowels.
  • Scarring of the fallopian tubes (Infertility).
  • Adhesions (Scars that hold organs to body cavity walls -- Painful)
  • Unruptured follicles (unreleased eggs from ovaries-- Infertility)

Endometriosis is associated with infertility, and it is not known whether it is a cause or consequence. There may be an immunological basis for endometriosis since research has shown increased immune activity in women with it as well as antibody reactions to sperm.
